Personalized Wellness Counseling
Wellness is a dynamic process of taking charge of our health and maximizing our quality of life. A wellness lifestyle goes hand in hand with any sound program of recovery from addictive disorders.
Unfortunately many, perhaps most people in recovery from alcoholism and drug addiction do not realize the full benefits of optimal sobriety. The reason: they fail to integrate a wellness lifestyle into their recovery. The majority of these people carry their nicotine addiction and other dangerous substitute addictions into their recovery: many also cling to toxic lifestyle choices adopted during their years of active addiction. Unless they are able to embrace healthy lifestyle choices they may end up unwittingly shaving years - even decades - off their life spans.
Once they have obtained a footing in sobriety, many people desire to "go the extra mile" by striving for optimal health and well-being. Unfortunately, the vast majority of treatment and continuing care programs are not geared up to address these needs.
In recognition of this unmet need, Dr. Newport offers a wellness counseling service for people who are seeking personalized guidance in wellness and recovery. This service is available by telephone, or face-to-face for persons living in or visiting Southern Arizona. All items discussed are treated in strictest confidence.
Wellness Counseling Format:
If a client has precisely identified a key issue that he or she wants to work on, they may be able to obtain the guidance they are seeking in a single session. In other cases the initial session may consist largely of a mutual assessment of the client's major concerns relating to wellness and recovery, followed by perhaps 2 or 3 additional sessions. These latter sessions typically focus on helping the client to explore realistic options for attaining their goals, implement an appropriate "action plan" and work with Dr. Newport for support and assistance in following through.
How do I know if I would benefit from wellness counseling?
You could derive considerable benefit from wellness counseling if YOU:
- Would like to add years - even decades - of joyful living and high quality sobriety to your life span
- Are striving to attain optimal health and personal fulfillment in sobriety
- Are struggling with nicotine addiction and/or one or more other "substitute addictions" (an eating disorder, sexual addiction, a workaholic lifestyle, etc.) and need help in getting on the right path and staying focused.
- Are struggling with a serious health challenge and need help in "sorting it all out", exploring available self-care and treatment options (both conventional and alternative) and TAKING CHARGE of your healing process. Dr. Newport will help you chart your own course to maximize your prospects of attaining the healing outcome you are seeking.
- You want to get more out of life - perhaps through changing careers or otherwise following your own special calling. Or perhaps you are yearning to develop and nurture more fulfilling relationships with others. You feel "stuck", however, and would like expert guidance to help you get started.
Is wellness counseling a form of therapy?
Wellness counseling is essentially a dynamic, interactive process of education and mutual collaboration in assisting and supporting you in clarifying your goals in the area of wellness and recovery, developing a proactive plan to move forward toward attaining these goals, and helping you stay on track.
While there is some degree of overlap between the processes and outcomes associated with wellness counseling and psychotherapy, wellness counseling should not be viewed as a substitute for either therapy, medical care or other needed services rendered by a qualified health care/helping professional. If during the course of counseling Dr. Newport surmises that you may be in need of services of a qualified health care or helping professional, he will urge you to obtain this help.
By the same token, if you are undergoing any form of health care treatment or are currently in therapy, you may wish to share what you are working on with Dr. Newport with these practitioners.
Is wellness counseling affordable?
Dr. Newport has developed an affordable fee schedule, generally charging a bit more for the initial session due to the additional work entailed. He also strives to keep costs down by employing a brief, issues-focused counseling model designed to meet your needs while minimizing the number of sessions.
